Aesop's Fables: The Ass and the Lapdog A Farmer one day came to the stables to see to his beasts of burden: among them was his favourite Ass, that was always well fed and often carried his master. With the Farmer came his Lapdog, who danced about and licked his hand and frisked about as happy as could be. The Farmer felt in his pocket, gave the Lapdog some dainty food, and sat down while he gave his orders to his servants. The Lapdog jumped into his master's lap, and lay there blinking while the Farmer stroked his ears. The Ass, seeing this, broke loose from his halter and commenced prancing about in imitation of the Lapdog. The Farmer could not hold his sides with laughter, so the Ass went up to him, and putting his feet upon the Farmer's shoulder attempted to climb into his lap. The Farmer's servants rushed up with sticks and pitchforks and soon taught the :

Unbelievable, this little book moved me a lot. I seldom think about the true meaning of love and life before. Well, now I can say, with my short sixteen-year’s life experience, it’s like the stars in the sky that lit my heart. The little prince is not only an ordinary fairy-tale for children, but also for grown-ups, and our teenagers. Nevertheless, when I read this book, I feel a little sad – about ourselves, whom are losing more and more innocence Here I am sitting on a couch alone, thinking about what I have just finished reading with tears of sadness filling my eyes and fire of indignation filling my heart, which revived my exhausted soul that has already been covered by the cruelty and the selfishness of the secular world for a long time. It is truly what I felt after reading Oliver Twist, written by the prominent British author Charles Dickens.

(P9)It's Saturday evening. Mr and Mrs Phillips and their children, Roger and Helen, are playing cards in the living room. Suddenly the telephone rings in the hall. Mr Phillips gets up and answers it. When he comes back he is smiling.

"That was your Aunt Elizabeth. She's back from Greenland. She's coming to see us tomorrow morning. And she's got a surprise for you two."

"A surprise for us! What is it?"

"I don't know," says their dad. "She says that it's a secret. And now it's time for bed."

"Come on, dad, one more game."

"Oh, okay. Then straight to bed!"

(P10)The next morning the doorbell rings. Roger and Helen run to open the door. It's Aunt Elizabeth, and she's got a big metal box. She hugs the children. Then she opens the box very carefully. It's full of small pieces of ice. She puts her hand into the ice and she slowly takes out a big egg. "This egg is from an ice cave in Greenland. It's very special. Now I need your help.”

"What do you want us to do?" ask the children.“你想让我们做什么?”

"I want to see what happens when we put the egg in a warm place. There is no heating in my office at the museum during the summer," says Aunt Elizabeth. "I thought I could leave it here."

"Yippee! An experiment!" shout the children.“太棒了!

They get a cardboard box and put the egg inside. Then they put the box next to the radiator in the kitchen.

(P11)Aunt Elizabeth comes to check the egg every day but nothing happens. Then, one day while the children are having their breakfast they hear a noise.

"Look at the egg," shouts Helen. "Something's happening. It's cracking."

Slowly a long beak-appears. "lt's a bird," says Roger.

"No, it isn't," answers Helen. "It hasn't got any feathers."

"Of course it's a bird, stupid. Baby birds haven't got feathers."

The animal opens its beak.

"Let's give it a sausage," says Roger.“我们给它一根香肠吧,”罗杰说。

Helen gives a sausage to the animal. The animal is very hungry. It eats five sausages, two cooked tomatoes and six pieces of toast. 来源:伴你学英语公众号(ID:gh_5c9592fefed1)
